For the sixteenth year, artist Garry Hill has commemorated The Winston all-star race with an original painting and fine art limited edition prints. The all-star race 2002 artwork was unveiled at Lowe’s Motor Speedway’s The Speedway Club on Thursday May 15th, during a brunch hosted by the Club for winner Ryan Newman and the Penske Racing Team.
Lowe’s Motor Speedway President and General Manager H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler and NASCAR Artist Garry Hill unveiled the original painting and presented winner Ryan Newman, Don Miller President of Penske Racing South and Crew Chief Matt Borland with framed lithograph prints from the painting to document their achievement for winning the all-star classic. The artwork features Ryan Newman in the Alltel Penske Racing Ford Taurus holding off the last lap charge of Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win The Winston at Lowe's Motor Speedway on, May 18, 2002. The third generation hard charging Earnhardt made contact with Newman exiting turn two. Newman’s racer turned sideways and the skill required to save the Alltel Penske Taurus was nothing short of miraculous.
Ryan Newman would not only win NASCAR’s prestigious The Winston but also go on to claim victory at New Hampshire. He was named 2002 Rookie Of The Year winning six pole positions and finishing 6th in the Winston Cup Point standings. "It is indeed an honor and a privilege to create the artwork annually to document and commemorate the effort of our sport's greatest teams," commented artist Garry Hill. 500 fine art prints and 50 artist's proof prints have been published to document the 2002 The Winston. A limited number of prints and artist's proof prints are available for sale to the public.
